Sow some sunshine this spring

Spring is around the corner which can only mean one thing…we are a step closer to planting a fresh potato crop, ready for eating delicious meals and to handcook our delicious, crunchy crisps! However, we don’t just plant potatoes, in previous years we have planted wheat, cover crops, sunflowers and this year we are sowing a wildflower seed mix on the borders of our farmland. These wonderful blooms create a haven for insects to flutter, fly, and hop across the land, providing them with food, shelter and places to breed, including bumble bees and red admiral butterflies.

What’s in the seedball?

Our seedballs are bursting with up to 30 assorted wildflower seeds known to attract pollinators. They include a vibrant mix of Common toadflax, Cornflower, Cowslip, Meadow cranesbill, Musk mallow, Oxeye daisy, and Red campion, providing a delightful blend of annuals and perennials.

A guide to planting

A single match box contains 6 seedballs and which is enough for 2-3 pots, just leave a 10cm spacing between each ball. Scatter them across bare soil in spring or autumn for the best results. Then keep them well watered for the seeds to germinate. Usually sprouts are seen within 2-4 weeks.

The seeds are in balls of clay, peat-free compost and chilli powder. This means they are naturally protected from being eaten by birds and insects. The chilli powder deters slugs and snails from eating young shoots.
